Haft Mewa, a seven (dried) fruit compote where a mix of seven nuts and fruits are soaked overnight and served to guests on the first day of Nowroz. Tradition...

Let's make Haft Mewa, Afghan Nowroz/Nowruz, (New Year) Seven Fruit Compote!

March 16, 2021

I hope you enjoy this docu-demo (recorded pre-pandemic) showcasing the vibrant Afghan community of Northern California with a field trip to the “Little Kabul” district of Fremont, California, and a demonstration of my favorite Nowroz food, Haft Mewa, Seven Fruit Compote. Please feel free to share this post and any of my YouTube videos with friends, family, and on your social media. I write these posts and make the videos as a way to share my culture. Trust me, these are not money makers but I do appreciate your effort in helping me get the word out about Afghan culture and food with the bigger world.

Celebrating Afghan Women on Women's History Month

March 1, 2021

Thankfully March is chock full of markers and celebrations to keep the days from blending together. On March 8th, I’ll be celebrating my 24th wedding anniversary along with International Woman’s Day. The Afghan Nowroz (New Year) celebration is on March 22nd, and my husband’s birthday (age not be disclosed) is on March 29th.

March is also Women’s History Month in the United States, an annual celebration highlighting the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.

In keeping with the spirit of Women’s History Month, starting tomorrow, March 2nd, I will highlight and uplift an Afghan woman who is a public figure or an unsung hero on my Afghan Culture Unveiled Facebook page.

The Community I didn’t Know I had

January 19, 2021

Thank you for your comments and emails following the loss of my mom, Jeja, to Covid on January 7th. Some of you have written for the first time and others I’ve known over the years. I feel like I’m being cradled, lifted and supported, by a community that I didn’t know I had.

Writing a blog is a strange experience because you put a lot of yourself out in the world but you never know who is receiving it and how they are reacting to it. I’m heartened that so many of you have connected to my stories about Jeja and have grown to love Afghan food and culture. I'm heartened that our message of putting our differences aside to find common ground so we can connect across cultures, religions, and borders has resonated with so many of you.
